150 MW/300 MWh Grid-Forming Energy Storage Project Successfully Completes Black Start Validation Test with Sineng Electric Energy Storage Solution

A 150 MW/300 MWh grid-forming energy storage project in southwestern China has successfully completed a black start validation test utilizing advanced 1250 kW central PCS supplied by Sineng Electric. The successful validation demonstrates the project’s capability to initiate system startup and restore power supply under extreme grid conditions, further verifying the advanced performance, reliability, and controllability of Sineng Electric’s grid-forming PCS technology.

As global power systems accelerate toward higher renewable penetration and lower inertia, maintaining grid stability and restoration capability has become increasingly challenging. By emulating the dynamic characteristics of synchronous generators, Sineng grid-forming PCS provide grid-strength support, short-term overload capability, voltage regulation, inertia response, damping control, and other functions under weak-grid and islanded operating conditions.

During the black start validation test, upon receiving a one-click command from the Energy Management System (EMS), Sineng Electric’s grid-forming PCS autonomously initiated voltage buildup from a zero-voltage condition according to a predefined voltage ramp profile. Leveraging advanced adaptive control and synchronization strategies, along with coordinated multi-unit control technologies, the PCS rapidly established stable voltage and frequency references while maintaining smooth and stable system performance throughout the startup process. No noticeable inrush current or parallel circulating current was observed, demonstrating high control precision and strong multi-machine coordination capability. Critical operating parameters, including voltage, frequency, and phase angle, remained stable throughout the process, fully validating the controllability of Sineng Electric’s PCS technology under complex operating scenarios.

This successful black start validation further underscores Sineng Electric’s technological strength in advanced grid-forming technology. As global power systems accelerate toward cleaner, more flexible, and more resilient energy systems, Sineng Electric remains committed to delivering advanced PCS solutions that support grid stability, enable renewable energy integration, and drive the development of next-generation power systems worldwide.
