Germany approves funds for Dresden Infineon fab

Germany semiconductor business Infineon Technologies has received final approval for the public funded element of its under-construction plant in Dresden from Germany’s federal ministry for economic affairs.

Infineon is expanding the site to meet growing customer demand from renewable energies, data centres and electromobility. Infineon will invest 5bn in the fab, known as Smart Power Fab, which it hopes to open in 2026.

“The final funding approval for our Smart Power Fab is an important milestone for us as a company and is a clear signal to the European semiconductor ecosystem,” said Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck.

“The semiconductors we manufacture in Dresden are our contribution to making the future value chains of key European industries even more robust.”
