US classification society ABS has signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korea’s Pusan National University Hydrogen Ship Technology Center to jointly develop technologies for liquid hydrogen carriers and cryogenic ship systems.

The partnership will bring together the technical expertise of both organisations to advance hydrogen propulsion systems and support the development of liquid hydrogen carriers, a challenging but essential part of scaling up global hydrogen supply chains.

“By working together, we are confident we can deliver advances in the application of hydrogen technology at sea,” said Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer.

The Hydrogen Ship Technology Center has been selected as the lead institution for South Korea’s “Development of Basic Technology for Commercialization of Liquid Hydrogen Carriers” project, part of the national “K-Shipbuilding Super Gap Vision 2040” strategy.
