Malaysian utility giant Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has announced its participation in two landmark projects aimed at developing a green hydrogen hub in Terengganu, leveraging hydroelectric power and floating solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The initiative is part of the country’s broader efforts under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) to accelerate the shift toward cleaner energy sources.

The project, centered around the Kenyir Dam in eastern Malaysia, will be implemented in partnership with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Terengganu Inc. Petronas will co-develop the green hydrogen facility with TNB, while TNB’s generation arm, TNB Genco Sdn Bhd, will work with Terengganu Inc to deploy floating solar panels as part of a hybrid solar-hydro model.

The green hydrogen produced from this initiative will be used to create hydrogen derivatives, including green methanol and green ammonia, positioning Malaysia as a potential regional hub in the emerging hydrogen economy.

“This landmark collaboration will pave the way for greater energy security and diversity for Malaysia,” said Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, President and CEO of Petronas. “It taps into the promising potential of green hydrogen and renewables to complement the national grid’s baseload, which is still largely dependent on conventional energy sources.”

The integrated project reflects Malaysia’s growing commitment to renewable energy innovation and aims to create scalable solutions that align with global decarbonization goals while enhancing domestic energy resilience.
