Powering Iraq’s Transition: How ATESS Hybrid Solar Systems Are Bridging the Energy Gap

Iraq is no stranger to energy instability. With soaring temperatures, chronic blackouts, and an over-reliance on diesel generators, the country’s energy infrastructure is under immense strain. In 2025 alone, Iraq is expected to need 54 GW of electricity to balance its power demand, yet it can only produce about 15 GW. This massive shortfall has left businesses and communities vulnerable to frequent disruptions.

At Petra Petrol Station in Slemani, ATESS installed a 100kW hybrid system incorporating an HPS100 inverter, 152kWh of lithium-ion battery storage, and a 64.4kWp solar PV array. This setup now generates over 130,000 kWh of clean electricity annually, slashing diesel generator use and reducing operational energy costs by up to 90%. By storing excess solar energy during the day and deploying it at night, the system ensures uninterrupted service, even during prolonged blackouts an all-too-common occurrence in Iraq’s strained grid.

What stands out is the system’s design for harsh environments. With operational capacity between -25°C to 55°C, ATESS’s technology is engineered for Iraq’s challenging climate, ensuring durability and low maintenance.

Elevating Hospitality Through Clean Energy

The hospitality sector in Iraq faces unique challenges due to energy volatility. A hotel in Slemani, plagued by outages and rising fuel costs, turned to ATESS for a customized solution. The system deployed includes a 250kW PCS250 battery inverter, a 138kWh battery rack, and a 120kWp solar PV array. The result: seamless 24/7 power supply for air conditioning, elevators, and guest services, even during grid failures.

Beyond energy security, the system enhances guest comfort, eliminates noise pollution from diesel generators, and boosts the hotel’s sustainability profile. By embracing renewable energy, the hotel sets a green benchmark in the region’s hospitality landscape.

A Scalable Model for the Middle East

The implications of these projects extend well beyond Slemani. Iraq’s energy challenges mirror those of many countries in the Middle East, where grid instability and fuel dependency are prevalent. ATESS’s hybrid solar systems present a scalable, cost-efficient, and climate-resilient model for energy transformation.

As Iraq and the wider region accelerates its push toward renewable energy integration, hybrid solar-plus-storage solutions will play a pivotal role. ATESS’s successful implementations are proof that solar innovation can thrive even in the harshest of environments, offering both economic and environmental dividends.
