Power techs company Mitsubishi Power has completed a project that uses hydrogen as a fuel in an industrial boiler. According to the company, it is the first such project in both Egypt and the wider Middle East and Africa region.
Announced in 2022, the project involved Mitsubishi Power designing, supplying, and installing systems to convert a 100 tonne-per-hour boiler from heavy fuel oil and natural gas to 100% hydrogen at the Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemicals Company (ANRPC).
The hydrogen fuel is recovered as a by-product from process gases used in chemical or refining units (like catalytic reformers or steam crackers) that contain high levels of hydrogen mixed with other gases.
The project uses around 14,000 tonnes of hydrogen-rich gases per year – most of which would have been flared or vented into the atmosphere. This reduces natural gas consumption by approximately 24,000 tonnes and removes an estimated 65,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
