South Australia is witnessing a surge in household participation in the energy transition, with rooftop solar now the state’s single largest energy supplier and more than 100 new home battery systems being installed each day since the launch of the state government’s rebate scheme on July 1.

The figures, released by the Smart Energy Council, highlight the growing role of households and consumer energy resources (CER) – including solar panels, battery storage, electric vehicles and smart appliances – in shaping a smarter, more resilient grid.

“The rise of the energy citizen means Australians are no longer just passive consumers but active participants in the smart energy economy,” the Council said in a statement.

The Smart Energy Council emphasised that household-led generation and storage are becoming the spearhead of Australia’s energy transition. It is advocating for smarter rebate schemes, stronger consumer protections, and improved digital infrastructure to ensure household participation is seamless, safe and rewarding.

The Council also pointed to community-driven initiatives such as Electrify Canberra/Suburb Zero ACT and Electrify Adelaide, which are helping accelerate the uptake of smart energy solutions at the local level.

“To every household that has made the leap to solar, battery storage, or smarter energy use – thank you,” the Council added. “Behind every installation is a deliberate decision to generate, store, and use smart energy, and that is transforming our energy system.”

According to the Council, the people-powered grid is only just beginning, with households expected to remain at the centre of Australia’s transition to a low-carbon energy system.
