BASF and Yara scrap US Gulf Coast low-carbon ammonia project

Chemicals company BASF and clean energy specialist Yara Clean Ammonia have axed plans for a low-carbon ammonia production facility with carbon capture and storage (CCS) on the US Gulf Coast.

Announced in 2023, the project was set to produce between 1.2 and 1.4 million tonnes of low-carbon ammonia per year, with around 95% of the carbon dioxide generated during production captured and permanently stored.

Now, BASF and Yara have discontinued the effort. In a statement, they said the decision reflects their commitment to focus on initiatives with the highest potential to achieve their respective value creation goals.

A feasibility study had been scheduled for completion by the end of 2023. No specific start-up date was confirmed.
