National Energy Conservation Day, observed on December 14 each year, highlights the critical importance of energy efficiency as a cornerstone of sustainable development. In India, the day is celebrated with a deep commitment to environmental sustainability and energy conservation. Introduced in 1991 by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power, the day aims to raise awareness about the need to adopt energy-efficient practices across various sectors. It serves not only as a reminder of the crucial role energy plays in our lives but also as a call for action to reduce energy consumption and enhance environmental stewardship.

One of the key highlights of National Energy Conservation Day is the National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA), which honor industrial units, institutions, and establishments that have made significant strides in reducing energy consumption. These awards, instituted alongside National Energy Conservation Day, have evolved into a platform for fostering innovation and competition in energy conservation. The 2024 NECA will be presented on December 14, celebrating the efforts of organizations that are driving energy efficiency across India.

The government of India has been actively promoting energy conservation through several initiatives. One such program is the Perform, Achieve, and Trade (PAT) scheme, which focuses on achieving energy reduction in energy-intensive industries. This scheme has resulted in energy savings worth Rs. 55,000 crore annually and a reduction of around 110 million tons of CO2 emissions. Additionally, the Standards and Labelling (S&L) Program, which provides consumers with information on the energy and cost-saving potential of appliances, covers 38 appliances as of March 2024, with 16 of them under a mandatory regime.

Another important initiative is the “Go Electric” campaign, launched by the Ministry of Power to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and electric cooking. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the benefits of switching to electric alternatives. In line with this, the “EV Yatra” web portal and mobile application were launched to promote e-mobility by providing a database of public EV charging stations.

The government has also introduced the UJALA scheme, which aims to replace conventional lighting with energy-efficient LED bulbs and tube lights. Since its launch in 2015, over 36.87 crore LED bulbs and 72 lakh LED tube lights have been distributed, resulting in significant energy savings and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP) has also been successful in replacing conventional street lights with energy-efficient LED lights, saving energy and reducing carbon emissions.

These initiatives reflect India’s commitment to energy conservation and transitioning toward a greener, more sustainable future. As National Energy Conservation Day continues to inspire individuals, industries, and institutions to adopt energy-efficient practices, it reinforces the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring a sustainable energy future. With ongoing efforts and government support, India is steadily progressing towards its goal of energy efficiency, setting an example for other nations to follow.
