Partners to design new large-scale LNG bunkering vessel

Classification society Lloyd’s Register and ship builder HD Hyundai Mipo (HMD) will design a large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel to meet the rising demand for LNG bunkering.

Having signed an approval in principle at the ongoing Gastech 2025 conference in Milan, Italy, the partners plan to design a 22,000 cubic metre vessel which could reduce bunkering time and lower costs for operators.

“LNG as an alternative fuel is attracting attention – and we realise that the demand for LNG bunkering vessels is increasing with the rise of LNG-fuelled vessels,” said Lee Don-jin, Executive Vice-President at HMD.

According to Intermodal Shipbrokers and Offshore, there are 1,329 LNG-fuelled vessels operating as of March 2025, with a total carrying capacity of 110 million gross tonnes. This is a sharp increase from 2021, when only 558 such vessels were in operation.
