Ammonia tested as clean fuel in Japanese glass furnaces

Japanese manufacturer of glass bottles Nihon Yamamura Glass is shifting from city gas to ammonia as part of a research project that aims to decarbonise glass production.

The company is working with a group from the University of Osaka and a number of Japanese gas companies to develop a solution that reduces emissions in a sector responsible for around 100 million tonnes of CO2 per year globally, according to research published in the Gas Review.

The bulk of these emissions come from the energy-intensive melting process, which uses natural gas combustion to melt raw materials at temperatures over 1,500°C.
