Europe plans year-earlier ban on Russian LNG by 2027

The European Union is proposing a total ban on Russian LNG imports by January 2027, a year earlier than originally scheduled.

Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said the 19th package of sanctions would target Russia’s war effort.

Alongside the full prohibition on Russian LNG imports, it proposes lifting remaining exemptions on Rosneft and Gazprom Neft and expanding sanctions on Russia’s shadow fleet and its enablers, including 118 new vessels.

“These new sanctions will also squeeze Russia’s access to technologies including AI and geospatial data, as well as critical resources that feed weapons production. This includes those received from foreign suppliers including China and India,” she said.
