California-based direct air capture (DAC) company Aircapture has opened Japan’s first direct air capture plant in partnership with cement producer Aizawa Concrete in Fukushima.

Matt Attwood, the company’s President and CEO, announced the news at gasworld’s North American CO2 Summit in Denver.

He said the plant will be located at a research and development (R&D) site operated by Aizawa. As of 2023, Aizawa had 15 ready-mix concrete plants and 11 precast manufacturing facilities.

Aircapture’s small-scale machine at the new location will pull CO2 out of the air and provide the cement manufacturer with CO2 gas for utilisation in several CO2 production processes.
