Hy2gen approved for Norway renewable ammonia plant

Norwegian firm Hy2gen Nordic has secured zoning approval from Sauda municipal council to build a renewable ammonia plant at the Birkeland industrial site in Rogaland, in south-west Norway.

It is part of Project Iverson, an initiative to scale up production of green ammonia as a carbon-neutral marine fuel led by Iverson eFuels – the project company for the Sauda plant.

The plant will feature a 270MW electrolysis unit powered by hydropower, producing renewable ammonia that is expected to eliminate around three million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in its first decade.

The project fits with the Rogaland County Council’s regional plan for zero-emission industry and supports Norway’s national climate goals. The country aims to achieve a 90% to 95% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 compared with 1990 levels.
