Biomethane, liquefied as bioLNG, offers a credible, near-term decarbonisation option for the maritime industry, according to a position paper from trade body the World Biogas Association (WBA).
It forecasts that bioLNG could cover up to 3% of the total energy demand for shipping fuels by 2030, and if used as a drop in fuel blended with fossil fuel LNG, by as much as 16%.
Biomethane is fully compatible with LNG-ready ships and existing bunkering infrastructure, with ports worldwide having LNG bunkering facilities, and a further 50 facilities planned in 2025.
But the paper recognises a raft of policy support measures are needed to spur biomethane’s adoption.
