Cutting-Edge Smart Switches Installed by Ameren Illinois to Reduce Outages and Improve Service

Ameren Illinois is advancing its electric grid modernization efforts in Vermilion County with the installation of state-of-the-art 69kV Viper®-HV reclosers, also known as smart switches.

These new devices are designed to detect issues on the electric system and determine whether power can be re-routed from alternate sources. Working alongside other outage detection technologies, the reclosers help isolate faults, reduce the duration of service disruptions, and limit the number of customers affected by outages.

Developed in partnership with G&W Electric, based in Bolingbrook, Illinois, the Viper®-HV recloser is the first purpose-built device rated for 69kV. The inaugural installation took place in Fithian. Key features include:

  • Encapsulated vacuum interrupters for high-voltage fault isolation
  • Integrated protection and control relays
  • SCADA compatibility for remote diagnostics and operation
  • Modular pole-top design for easier installation and maintenance

Ameren has already deployed 12 units across its service territory, with nine additional installations planned in Illinois in 2025. This initiative supports Ameren’s broader strategy to strengthen grid reliability by:

  • Isolating faults on specific power line segments while keeping adjacent segments energized
  • Automatically transferring customers to alternate power sources during disruptions
  • Replacing traditional open air break switches in areas vulnerable to winter ice storms, minimizing impacts during 69kV system malfunctions
