In the rush towards liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a maritime fuel, one carrier is swimming against the tide.
Since October, Sweden-based Wallenius Sol has transitioned its vessels Baltic Enabler and Botnia Enabler from LNG to liquefied biogas, after striking a supply agreement with Nordic energy firm Gasum.
Rebecca Tagaeus, Sustainability Officer, said, “It shows that renewable fuels are not a distant solution but something we can use here and now.”
Liquefied biogas is produced from organic waste streams such as residues from agriculture and food production. Since it is chemically identical to LNG, the vessels can operate with no technical modifications.
