At the 8th International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly held in New Delhi, African nations took center stage as they partnered with India to advance affordable off-grid solar power solutions. The event underscored a growing wave of solar adoption across Africa, driven by India’s commitment to supporting energy access, sustainability, and self-reliance in developing regions.
Africa’s Solar Push Gains Momentum
Ghana emerged as a key participant, signing a country partnership with the ISA to deploy solar-powered pumps aimed at strengthening food and water security. With a $2 billion annual food import bill, Ghana’s transition toward solar irrigation marks a significant move to improve agricultural productivity and energy resilience. The initiative represents a broader African strategy—leveraging solar technology to address both energy poverty and economic dependency.
India’s Role in Powering Africa’s Clean Energy Shift
India’s renewable expertise and manufacturing capacity are becoming instrumental in Africa’s clean energy transformation. Through the ISA, India is helping African countries overcome the high cost barriers of diesel power by promoting collective procurement and knowledge-sharing mechanisms. According to ISA Director General Ashish Khanna, solar energy in these regions can be generated at just 5 cents per unit—nearly one-fifth the cost of diesel-based electricity, which ranges from 25–30 cents per unit.
Expanding Global Partnerships for a Shared Energy Future
Beyond Africa, small island nations such as Dominica also outlined their clean energy ambitions at the assembly. Dominica aims to achieve 100% renewable power by 2030, sourcing 75% of its energy from hydro and geothermal by 2026. These developments highlight the global momentum towards cleaner, more resilient power systems supported by India’s solar diplomacy.
The 8th ISA Assembly showcased how Africa’s growing solar ambitions are being powered by India’s technological leadership and collaborative spirit. As African nations scale their renewable capacity through ISA-led initiatives, India’s role as a trusted partner in driving accessible, low-cost solar energy becomes even more vital—marking a new era of South-South cooperation in the global clean energy transition.
