The European Commission has announced a €2.9bn investment for sustainable fuels by 2027.
Most of the investment (€2bn) will come under InvestEU, with €300m coming from the European Hydrogen Bank to support hydrogen-based fuels for aviation and shipping, and €446m from the Innovation Fund for synthetic aviation fuel and maritime fuel projects. A sum of €133.5m will be allocated to fuels-related research and innovation under Horizon Europe.
Together with member states, the Commission will launch an eSAF early movers coalition pilot project by the end of 2025 as it aims to mobilise at least €500m for synthetic aviation fuel projects under its Sustainable Transport Investment Plan. It follows announcements on Monday to invest similar amounts in .
In the medium term, the Commission will work towards establishing a mechanism to connect fuel producers and buyers, providing revenue certainty and reducing investment risk.
