JIVO Energy Commissions Sierra Leone’s First Hybrid Off-Grid Power System in Moyamba

JIVO Energy has successfully completed the installation and commissioning of Sierra Leone’s first hybrid off-grid energy system, delivering reliable electricity to the Moyamba Town Mini-Grid and marking a significant milestone in the country’s rural electrification and energy transition efforts.

Financed by the World Bank and implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the project was executed over a 20-month construction period, followed by one year of operations and maintenance (O&M) support, ensuring long-term system reliability and performance.

The hybrid energy system integrates a 954.8 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, a 2,032.128 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and a 500 kVA diesel generator, creating a fully off-grid, resilient, and sustainable power solution. The system is designed to deliver continuous, stable, and independent electricity supply, significantly improving energy access for households, businesses, and public infrastructure in Moyamba Town.

The commissioning of the project is expected to boost socio-economic development, supporting essential services, enhancing business activity, and improving overall quality of life in the community. By combining renewable generation with battery storage and backup generation, the project also strengthens grid resilience and energy security, while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The milestone installation represents a major step forward in Sierra Leone’s transition towards sustainable and climate-resilient energy infrastructure, reinforcing national efforts to expand clean energy access and accelerate rural electrification.
