WindForce PLC has secured 12 standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in Sri Lanka, marking a major development in the country’s power sector. The projects were awarded after a competitive international bidding process conducted by the Ceylon Electricity Board in February 2026. This is the largest standalone battery storage initiative ever announced in Sri Lanka and represents a significant step toward strengthening and modernizing the national grid.

The total combined capacity of the 12 projects will be 120 megawatts (MW), with a total storage capacity of 480 megawatt-hours (MWh). Each project site will have a capacity of 10 MW and 40 MWh of storage. These systems will store excess electricity generated during low-demand periods and release it when demand increases. The projects will be implemented under a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) model, with a contract period of 15 years. The total investment for the initiative is estimated at around LKR 20.79 billion. The financing structure will include 80 percent debt and 20 percent equity.

Out of the 12 projects, 11 will be fully owned and operated by WindForce PLC. These facilities will be located in Ampara, Old Anuradhapura, Beliatta, Chunnakam, Hambantota, Kilinochchi, Mahiyanganaya, Maho, Polonnaruwa, Valachchenai, and Vavuniya. The remaining project, located in Vavunathivu, will be developed in partnership with Vidullanka PLC. This collaboration brings together two established local renewable energy companies to deliver the final site.

The main aim of the battery storage program is to manage the variability of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. As Sri Lanka increases its share of renewable energy, maintaining grid stability becomes more important. Battery storage systems help by absorbing surplus energy and supplying it during peak hours. They also support frequency regulation and improve overall reliability of the power system.

This initiative is considered the first grid-scale standalone battery storage program in the country. It reflects Sri Lanka’s efforts to move toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. By introducing advanced storage technology, WindForce PLC is supporting the country’s transition to a stronger and more flexible electricity network. The project is expected to enhance energy security, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and contribute to long-term economic and environmental benefits for Sri Lanka.
