SP Energy Networks And The University Of Glasgow Launch Multi-Year Partnership To Build A Sector-Leading Cyber Defence Lab And Strengthen Net Zero Skills

A new multi-year partnership has been launched to develop a sector-leading cyber defence lab, create funding for PhD and graduate apprenticeship programmes, and build the data, cyber, digital and AI skills needed to support a resilient, Net Zero electricity system. The collaboration strengthens the long-running relationship between SP Energy Networks and the University of Glasgow, combining their expertise in engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, and cyber security.

According to Jen Davies, the partnership reflects a strong commitment to developing people and attracting new talent to the energy sector. She explained that graduate apprenticeships, PhD sponsorships and specialised training credentials will open more pathways for individuals at different career stages to grow within the industry. She added that working with leading academic experts will help the organisation retain skilled employees, build confidence, and strengthen long-term operational resilience.

As the UK continues progressing toward the government’s Clean Power 2030 goals, the partnership will focus on creating strong foundations for graduate apprenticeships in essential skill areas. It will also expand research and development efforts that support cyber, data and digital programmes, while establishing a framework for knowledge exchange, innovation and hands-on project delivery between both organisations.

However, the collaboration is intended to go beyond academic research alone. It aims to bring teams together to design solutions, test new ideas in real-world environments, and identify fresh opportunities for innovation. Whether through small technical trials or large-scale joint programmes, the partnership is expected to help strengthen the UK electricity network, enhance customer outcomes and contribute to the country’s broader decarbonisation objectives.

Chris Pearce, Vice-Principal for Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Glasgow, said the new strategic partnership builds on a strong existing relationship with SP Energy Networks. He noted that combining expertise from both sides will create new opportunities for advanced research and help develop education and career pathways in areas that will contribute to a greener and safer future for the UK.
