Colombian President Gustavo Petro recently attended a ceremony at a refinery near Cartagena, where he signed a JA Solar module to celebrate the successful completion of a groundbreaking solar project. This marks the first-ever solar power plant at an oil refinery in Latin America, aligned with President Petro’s efforts to promote renewable energy.

JA Solar provided the solar panels for the 23MW project, which was built by PowerChina at Ecopetrol’s Cartagena Refinery. This project is a major step in integrating renewable energy into traditional industries. Ecopetrol’s CEO, Ricardo Roa, called it a “milestone in replacing traditional oil and gas with clean energy.”

At the ceremony, President Petro praised the project, calling it a “milestone with far-reaching implications” for Colombia’s energy future. He expressed hope that similar initiatives would be developed across the country. Petro also thanked JA Solar and other Chinese companies for bringing advanced technology to Colombia, contributing to the country’s energy transition.

This project highlights JA Solar’s commitment to advancing renewable energy in Latin America. The company has already made significant strides in the region, such as partnering with Solatio in Brazil to supply 1.2GW of solar panels for two major power stations. In Chile, JA Solar powered the 480MW CEME1 PV Power Station, the largest single-unit solar project in the country.

In 2024, JA Solar received recognition from EUPD Research as a “Top Brand PV” in several Latin American countries, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. Aiqing Yang, Executive President of JA Solar, emphasized the company’s dedication to driving the region’s renewable energy transition. “We remain committed to technological innovation and market excellence, working towards a sustainable future and global carbon neutrality,” he said.
