Poland’s Gaz-System could become Europe’s first hydrogen transmission system operator (TSO) after undergoing a new EU certification procedure.
The company said it was the first to undergo the EU’s new certification process to certify its eligibility to operate regulated hydrogen transmission infrastructure.
Gaz-System said the step could play a significant part in building a new energy market in Poland.
An opinion published by the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) said that Gaz-System met EU ownership unbundling requirements, which outline independence criteria.
ACER, however, said ongoing compliance will depend on ongoing monitoring of its independence, particularly around indirect government influence and links to other state-owned energy companies.
The state-owned firm, which launched consultations for Poland’s 2026-2035 in February, is currently involved in two European hydrogen pipeline projects: the hydrogen cluster and the hydrogen pipeline.
The move follows the EU’s adoption of the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Market package in 2024, which created hydrogen TSOs as a regulated role.
