Energy Storage in the Desert Furnace: Hopewind’s Liquid-Cooled Central PCS Proves 51°C Rating Is a Business Imperative for India

Hopewind is currently powering over 650 MW of utility-scale battery storage across two major projects in Rajasthan, deploying more than 260 units of its 2.5 MW central power conversion system (PCS). These projects are ongoing, with further deployments expected. Designed for continuous full-load operation at 51°C ambient without derating, the platform keeps these sites operating at full capacity through the harshest summer months, turning a potential vulnerability into a commercial advantage.

Rajasthan’s summer heat routinely exceeds 50°C, pushing power electronics to their limits just when grid demand peaks. For most energy storage systems, this means derating, efficiency loss, or unplanned downtime. Hopewind has demonstrated that extreme heat does not have to come at that cost.

Built for Real-World Heat

The platform sets new safety benchmarks with IP66-rated isolation cabinets, ensuring reliability in demanding environments. At the core of Hopewind’s solution is a proprietary intelligent liquid-cooling platform featuring tri-zone thermal management: phase-change cooling for capacitors, liquid cooling for IGBT modules, and air-to-air heat exchangers for auxiliary components. This design enables zero derating at 51°C, directly translating to higher annual yield in India’s solar-rich but thermally demanding regions.

Efficiency and Operational Simplicity

With a maximum efficiency of 98.88%, the system maximizes revenue during the highest-value solar windows. Maintenance is simplified through modular design: IGBT modules weigh just 10 kg and can be replaced on-site in minutes, while the liquid cooling units have extended maintenance intervals and external fans are self-cleaning. Real-time remote monitoring of coolant levels, temperatures, and system faults enables intelligent, low-touch operations.

Flexible Architecture from Single Unit to Turnkey Station

Hopewind’s central PCS is available as individual units ranging from 1.25 MW to 2.5 MW, providing granular scalability for phased deployments. For larger projects, the company provides a complete turnkey solution in prefabricated 20 ft or 40 ft containerized stations, pre-tested with integrated PCS, transformers, and auxiliary systems. These turnkey stations support power levels from 5 MW to 10 MW, dramatically reducing on-site installation time and civil works while ensuring factory-grade quality.

Grid-Forming Capability and Low-SCR Stability

Beyond thermal resilience, the platform delivers advanced grid-forming technology based on virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control. It provides inertial response, voltage support, and black-start capability, maintaining stable operation even in weak-grid areas with very low short-circuit ratios (SCR). Hopewind has a proven track record of deploying grid-forming technology in wind power, PV, and BESS projects.

Proven in India’s Harshest Lab

Rajasthan serves as both India’s solar leader and its most demanding test environment. Hopewind’s footprint confirms that a central PCS rated for 51°C, combined with a flexible turnkey solution from 1.25 MW to 10 MW, is not a technical luxury but a fundamental business case for utility-scale energy storage in extreme climates.

In recent years, Hopewind has accelerated its contribution to India’s energy transition across both PV and BESS solutions. With its 320kW string inverter withstanding 51°C without derating and its central PCS operating at full load at 51°C, Hopewind delivers products fully capable of meeting the rigorous demands of the Indian market. To date, Hopewind has shipped nearly 2GW of PCS to India, with further growth expected as the country expands its utility-scale storage capacity.
