Week in Africa: Mozambique 30 MW Solar Tender; SA 1.5 GW Hybrid Project; Guinea Mining Goes Solar and More…

Mozambique has relaunched the tender for a 30 MW solar PV project in Dondo, Sofala Province. The project, led by MIREME and ARENE under PROLER, will select an IPP to develop, finance, build, and operate the plant, supporting clean power expansion and private investment in Mozambique’s renewable sector.

South Africa is advancing a 1.5 GW hybrid renewable energy project in the Eastern Cape, developed by Dimsum Energy and Goldwind Africa. The project will combine wind, solar PV, and battery storage to improve power reliability, support local jobs, attract investors, reduce emissions, and strengthen South Africa’s clean energy mix.

A multinational mining company is planning solar PV procurement in Guinea to power its operations more sustainably. The move reflects growing C&I renewable adoption in mining, helping reduce energy costs, improve reliability, and meet ESG goals while limiting dependence on grid supply and thermal generation.

The African Development Bank and Gabon concluded the 10th Africa Energy Market Place in Libreville to accelerate reforms and investment under Mission 300. The forum brought policymakers, partners, and private stakeholders together to align Gabon’s energy priorities with electricity access targets and develop a stronger national energy compact.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has awarded a renewable energy project to strengthen power supply and support mining regions. The project aims to reduce electricity shortages, diversify energy sources, and provide cleaner, more reliable power for industries such as cobalt and copper mining, which are vital to global clean energy supply chains.

AfDB is supporting Mauritania’s green hydrogen sector through technical assistance focused on auction procedures, legal frameworks, bidding documents, and implementation planning. A validation workshop in Nouakchott reviewed the framework, helping Mauritania build transparent, investor-friendly systems to scale green hydrogen and attract private capital.

Gabon became the 25th country to join AfDB’s Africa Energy Market Place platform. The Libreville edition focused on renewable energy, grid expansion, investment mobilization, and Mission 300 priorities, helping Gabon refine policy reforms and develop investable energy projects to expand access and strengthen its power system.

Bajel Projects has secured two major EPC orders in the MENA region worth over ₹400 crore. The contracts cover two contiguous 500 kV overhead transmission line sections, supporting national grid reinforcement, high-voltage power evacuation, grid stability, and the company’s expanding international transmission infrastructure portfolio.

A study highlights why clean energy funding often fails to reach African renewable projects. Despite global commitments, many projects face financing barriers linked to sovereign credit ratings, short loan tenors, and high borrowing costs, delaying deployment even when projects are technically sound and commercially viable.

Jakson Infra has secured a US$62.22 million power distribution project in Angola under the World Bank-supported ESIAP programme. Awarded by Angola’s Ministry of Energy and Water, the project will rehabilitate Luanda’s distribution networks, improve reliability, and expand electricity access for households and businesses.

JinkoSolar has signed a 500 MW distributed generation framework agreement with Fouani Group in Nigeria. The partnership will supply high-efficiency modules for commercial, industrial, and residential projects, helping users reduce diesel generator reliance, cut electricity costs, and access clean self-generated power.

The 75 MW Graspan Solar PV plant has been commissioned in South Africa’s Northern Cape. Developed by ENGIE and Pele Green Energy under REIPPPP Bid Window 4, the project includes over 200,000 solar panels and is expected to power around 80,000 homes while supporting local socio-economic development.

JinkoSolar has signed a 100 MW distributor framework agreement in Nigeria for Tiger Neo 3.0 modules. The deal supports distributed PV and C&I growth across West Africa, offering local distributors stable access to high-efficiency N-type TOPCon modules suited for challenging market and climate conditions.

Empower New Energy has started construction of a solar and battery storage project for Neo Industry’s cocoa processing facility in Kekem, Cameroon. The project includes 1.8 MWp rooftop solar and 2.5 MWh BESS, reducing diesel and grid dependence while improving energy reliability and operational resilience.

Toyota Tsusho has commissioned two 50 MW solar plants in Tunisia’s Sidi Bouzid and Tozeur regions. Developed with Scatec, the 100 MW portfolio will supply power under long-term agreements, support Tunisia’s renewable energy target, serve around 120,000 households annually, and reduce emissions by about 108,000 tonnes per year.

Inspired Evolution has committed US$40 million to CrossBoundary Energy to expand renewable energy projects across Africa. The investment will support hybrid clean power infrastructure for mining operations, including projects linked to Kamoa-Kakula in the DRC and Baomahun Mine in Sierra Leone, strengthening reliable low-carbon power access.
