Industrial gas company African Oxygen (Afrox), a wholly owned Linde subsidiary, has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with South African renewable energy platform Discovery Green to power a Cape Town-based air separation unit (ASU).
Under the PPA, from April 2028, Discovery Green will supply the Kuils River ASU in Cape Town with around 28GWh of renewable electricity each year.
The supply is expected to reduce Afrox’s operational carbon emissions by approximately 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent each year.
Discovery Green will supply the renewable energy from its portfolio of wind and solar infrastructure across the Western Cape, Mpumalanga, and the Free State.
With a current production capacity of over 700MW, its diversified portfolio supports a reliable energy supply, long-term price certainty, and operational flexibility.
Ferdinand Kuehner, Managing Director of Afrox, said the agreement supports the company’s goal to reduce Scope 2 emissions by “delivering essential industrial gases with a reduced carbon footprint.”
Scope 2 emissions are greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heat, and cooling.
“As the South African energy landscape undergoes rapid reform, Afrox is proactively transitioning its energy model to ensure long-term resilience and environmental stewardship,” Kuehner added.
It is estimated that South Africa requires 60GW of renewable energy generation to be fully operational by 2030, to maintain current levels of economic growth.
According to , the Kuils River ASU was commissioned in 2019 and has a total production capacity of 188 tonnes per day (tpd).
