An Albanian consortium is seeking financial support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the development of a 160 MWp solar-plus-storage project, signaling continued investor interest in utility-scale renewable energy expansion in the Western Balkans.
The proposed project combines a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with an integrated battery energy storage system (BESS), aimed at improving grid stability and enabling more flexible renewable power dispatch.
According to the report, the project is currently in the development and financing stage, with the Albanian developers engaging with the EBRD to secure funding and technical support. The initiative is expected to follow the bank’s standard renewable energy auction and project financing framework, which has previously supported multiple solar developments across Albania.
If approved, the project would contribute significantly to Albania’s growing renewable energy pipeline, which is largely focused on diversifying away from hydropower dependency and strengthening energy security amid climate-related variability in hydro generation.
The development also aligns with Albania’s national renewable energy targets, which aim to expand solar capacity and increase the share of non-hydro renewables in the national energy mix by 2030.
Industry observers note that hybrid solar-plus-storage projects are becoming increasingly important in the region, as they allow for better integration of intermittent renewable sources and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based backup generation.
The EBRD has been actively involved in supporting renewable energy auctions and infrastructure development across the Western Balkans, making it a key financier in the region’s energy transition efforts.
The proposed 160 MWp project, once finalized, is expected to strengthen Albania’s position as an emerging hub for utility-scale solar and storage investments in Southeast Europe.
