Liquefied natural gas specialist Cheniere Energy Partners (Cheniere Partners) has contracted Bechtel Energy to complete engineering for the first phase of the Sabine Pass Liquefaction (SPL) expansion project in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.
A signed engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract covers Train 7, a boil-off gas re-liquefaction unit, and supporting infrastructure with tie-ins to the existing Sabine Pass LNG Terminal.
Cheniere, through subsidiary Sabine Pass Liquefaction Stage V (SPLV), has also issued Bechtel a limited notice to proceed (LNTP) for early engineering and procurement activities related to Phase 1.
Phase 1 is expected to have a total production capacity of over six million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG. The entire expansion project is targeting a peak production capacity of around 20 mtpa of LNG across three trains.
Cheniere expects to reach the final investment decision (FID) for Phase 1 by early 2027, subject to securing the necessary regulatory approvals and financing agreements.
Jack Fusco, Cheniere’s CEO, said, “The SPL expansion project commences as LNG market dynamics highlight the criticality of secure supply in the global energy system.”
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) application for the authorisation to construct and operate the SPL Expansion Project has not yet been approved.
Sabine Pass LNG terminal currently has a production capacity of over 30 mtpa of LNG.
