AM Green will explore developing a one million-tonne-per-year (tpa) green hydrogen-based ammonia plant at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi, southern India.
The developer signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the port authority covering ammonia production, handling, storage and refuelling operations, aiming to connect the port with major demand in Europe and wider Asia.
The facility would add to a $52.3m 3,000 tpa, green hydrogen facility in 2025, a 750-metre e-methanol bunkering and refuelling pilot project, and an ongoing 9MW wind power project.
The MOU comes as AM Green accelerates its bid to become a major supplier to Europe, having on a 1.5 million tonne green ammonia plant in Kakinada in January, with German firms Uniper and RWE lined up for the majority of offtake.
India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission also targets five million tonnes of annual hydrogen production by 2030, with plans for hubs at major ports and two vessels to be retrofitted for green fuels by 2027.
Under the mission, the subsidies have been awarded for domestic green hydrogen and derivative production through 10-year contracts covering 724,000 tonnes of green ammonia supply.
