US energy infrastructure company Sempra Infrastructure (Sempra), a subsidiary of Sempra (SRE), has achieved first liquefied natural gas (LNG) production at its Energia Costa Azul (ECA) LNG Phase 1 export project in Ensenada, Baja California, on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.
The project consists of a single liquefaction train with a nameplate capacity of 3.25 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG. It is expected to reach substantial completion in the summer of 2026, while the second phase remains in development.
This represents a change from earlier guidance, with the company targeting first LNG production in late 2024.
The ECA LNG facility will support Asian markets, using the shortest shipping route, and the wider global market, from its strategic location on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.
Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra, said, “The production of first LNG marks a significant milestone on the path to full operations expected in the coming months.”
The project is supported by definitive 20-year sale and purchase agreements with French energy firm TotalEnergies and Japanese trading company Mitsui for the purchase of a combined 2.5 mtpa of LNG, with further offtake agreements expected ahead of commercial operations.
ECA LNG is a joint venture between Sempra and its subsidiaries (83.4%) and TotalEnergies (16.6%).
