Odisha has emerged as one of India’s top-performing states under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, securing first place among states in the medium consumer base category at the PM Surya Ghar Excellence Awards 2026.
The recognition follows the state’s exceptional performance during the nationwide “Month of Solar” campaign conducted in May 2026. The achievement reflects the collaborative efforts of the Government of Odisha and Tata Power-led Odisha DISCOMs, which serve as nodal agencies for implementing the rooftop solar programme across the state through joint ventures with the state government.
Odisha earned top rankings across multiple implementation parameters, highlighting its leadership in rooftop solar deployment and consumer engagement. The state secured first rank for the highest number of consumer applications received under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, the maximum number of rooftop solar installations commissioned, and the highest number of DISCOM technical inspections conducted. Odisha also achieved third rank nationally for vendor registrations, strengthening the state’s growing solar ecosystem.
As of June 2026, Odisha has recorded significant progress under the flagship rooftop solar initiative, with increasing adoption helping households reduce dependence on conventional grid electricity while lowering monthly power expenses.
The programme’s impact has extended beyond clean energy generation, delivering tangible financial benefits to consumers. Thousands of households across the state have reported substantial reductions in electricity bills, with many beneficiaries achieving near-zero monthly power costs after installing rooftop solar systems.
In western Odisha alone, nearly 11,000 households have benefited from almost zero electricity bills through rooftop solar adoption. The resulting savings are being redirected toward essential household needs, including education, healthcare, transportation, and long-term financial planning.
The achievement underscores Odisha’s commitment to accelerating clean energy adoption, enhancing energy self-reliance, and supporting India’s broader renewable energy ambitions. The state’s rooftop solar programme is increasingly being viewed as a scalable model for sustainable energy transition that combines environmental benefits with measurable socio-economic outcomes.
With continued support from the Government of Odisha, Tata Power-led Odisha DISCOMs, implementation partners, and consumers, the state is expected to further expand rooftop solar deployment and strengthen its position as a leader in India’s clean energy transition.
The recognition at the PM Surya Ghar Excellence Awards 2026 reinforces Odisha’s standing as a frontrunner in renewable energy adoption and highlights its vision of building a greener, more energy-secure future for its citizens.
