Samvardhana Motherson International Limited, through its energy arm Motherson New Energy Limited (MNEL), has commissioned its first ground-mounted captive solar power project in Uttar Pradesh, marking a key milestone in the group’s renewable energy transition strategy.

The project has been developed through MNEL’s subsidiary Onega Solar Private Limited and is located in Mahoba. The 15 MWp solar facility will supply clean electricity to multiple Motherson manufacturing plants across the state under a group captive arrangement, supporting the company’s efforts to decarbonise its operations.

According to the company, the solar plant is expected to generate approximately 23.4 GWh of renewable electricity annually, helping reduce carbon emissions by around 17,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The project is also expected to enhance energy cost stability and improve long-term operational resilience for the group’s manufacturing operations.

The development has been executed in partnership with renewable energy company ib vogt, which supported the project through land acquisition, regulatory approvals, technical design, and EPC execution.

Motherson Group stated that the project represents an important step in integrating renewable energy across its global manufacturing footprint and strengthening its long-term energy security strategy.

Commenting on the development, Laksh Vaaman Sehgal, Vice Chairman of Motherson Group, said the commissioning of the captive solar project reflects the company’s commitment to building future-ready operations through sustainable and responsible growth.

Kunal Vohra, COO of the Energy Business at Motherson Group, said access to competitively priced renewable energy is increasingly critical for global manufacturing, adding that the project lays the foundation for scaling the group’s renewable energy portfolio.

The initiative aligns with Motherson’s broader sustainability goals, including increasing renewable energy adoption, reducing carbon intensity across operations, and supporting customers in their decarbonisation efforts. The group also indicated that MNEL is evaluating additional renewable energy projects across multiple Indian states as part of its long-term energy transition roadmap.
