Meta and Reliance Industries have announced a major expansion of their strategic partnership with an agreement to develop an AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The facility will mark Meta’s first AI-focused data center investment in India and support the company’s growing artificial intelligence infrastructure requirements.

Under the agreement, Reliance will build a 168 MW data center, which Meta will lease with options for future capacity expansion. The facility will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, with Meta covering the full cost of the energy and water required for operations.

Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the partnership will help the company scale its global AI infrastructure while deepening its long-term investment in India, one of its largest and fastest-growing markets.

The data center will form part of Reliance’s broader development of a large-scale data center campus in Jamnagar, which is expected to become one of the world’s largest data center hubs. The project will also benefit from enhanced connectivity through Meta’s global network investments, including Project Waterworth, the company’s subsea cable initiative.

The announcement builds on a longstanding partnership between the two companies. In 2020, Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, followed by collaborations focused on connectivity, digital commerce, and artificial intelligence. The new agreement extends the partnership into the physical infrastructure supporting AI and digital services.

Alongside the data center investment, Meta announced nearly 1 GW of additional renewable energy procurement in India. The company has signed agreements with CleanMax for 837 MW of new solar and wind capacity across Rajasthan and Karnataka, bringing its total announced capacity with the developer to more than 900 MW. Meta has also partnered with Fourth Partner Energy for 88 MW of solar and wind projects across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.

The renewable energy agreements, together with Reliance’s plans to power the Jamnagar facility with clean energy, are expected to support Meta’s goal of matching its operations with 100% renewable energy while reducing value chain emissions in India.
