Protium secures hydrogen supply with H-Power deal

UK green hydrogen firm Protium has expanded its distribution network through a new agreement with H-Power, formerly AFC Energy, securing a supply of 5,000kg of green hydrogen and integrating a fourth distribution hub into its UK network.

The deal, which the companies describe as the UK’s first commercial sale of ammonia-cracked hydrogen, also includes a 12-month agreement for Protium to use H-Power’s pilot cracking site as a regional distribution hub.

With the addition of Dunsfold Park in Surrey, Protium now operates an interconnected network of three production sites and four distribution hubs across the UK, including production assets in Wales and a combined production and distribution site in Dorset

Protium said the integration of the Surrey ammonia-to-hydrogen facility represents a “core milestone”, strengthening its logistics and distribution network.

The deal follows regulatory approval from the Environment Agency earlier this year, allowing hydrogen sales from H-Power’s 300kg/day ammonia cracking facility.

Protium with electrolyser maker ITM Power to jointly develop and operate a rescued government-backed 15MW project, under a broader agreement targeting country-wide developments.

In May, it the project from carbon capture firm Storegga, and purchased a stake in a small-scale South Coast UK hydrogen plant.

These add to Protium’s two existing production facilities in Wales, of 100kW and 2.5MW.
