US-headquartered electrolyser firm Ohmium is set to support the design and development of green hydrogen systems for Polish developer Hynfra’s large-scale Middle East and Africa green ammonia projects.
Ohmium will provide technical support during front-end engineering design (FEED) activities for Hynfra’s projects in Mauritania, Jordan and Oman, helping shape the design of the developments’ green hydrogen systems.
Hynfra CEO Tomoho Umeda confirmed that Ohmium is one of the company’s PEM electrolyser partners, placing the US manufacturer among the suppliers being considered to support its developments.
“We maintain at least two qualified suppliers for each technology category,” Umeda said. “Ohmium is one of our PEM electrolyser partners.”
The agreement could expand Ohmium’s exposure to some of the Middle East and Africa’s largest planned green ammonia developments. Despite operating a in India, the company has so far announced only a limited number of commercial-scale deployments.
Among Hynfra’s portfolio, the $1bn Jordan Green Ammonia (JGA) project is currently the most advanced.
Planned for the country’s Port of Aqaba, the JGA project will combine 550MW of solar with 500MWh of energy storage to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year.
Last month, JGA received approval from the Jordanian government’s executive branch, as Hynfra targeted reaching final investment decision by . Hynfra also to conduct FEED work for the project’s ammonia synthesis loop.
The developer’s other projects remain in feasibility stages. The Mauritania Green Ammonia project in Nouakchott would mirror Jordan with a nameplate capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year.
Oman, however, would mark a significant step up in scale. The $5.4bn Oman Green Ammonia project in Duqm could produce 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, using 2.6GW of installed renewables.
Ohmium’s deployed project base remains relatively modest. The company currently has a 5.2MW installation at ACME’s green ammonia project in Rajasthan, India, and has announced agreements to supply a for a Croatian refinery and a 4MW unit for an .
Ohmium CEO Dr Markus Tacke said the agreement with Hynfra was an “exciting milestone” for the firm as it expands into the Middle East and Africa.
