E.ON has introduced a new standard framework for flexible connection agreements (FCAs) aimed at accelerating the integration of battery energy storage systems into the electricity grid and improving overall system efficiency.

The company said the new model is designed to enable faster grid connections for storage projects despite limited local grid capacity, while ensuring stable and secure grid operations. Under the FCA framework, the operation of battery storage systems is synchronized with real-time grid conditions, allowing dynamic adjustment of energy feed-in and consumption during periods of high or low network load.

E.ON noted that the approach benefits both storage operators and grid operators by improving investment certainty, reducing connection delays, and optimizing system costs. The framework also enhances grid stability, which the company said ultimately benefits end consumers.

The concept was first tested in a pilot project conducted in collaboration with ECO STOR at the Bollingstedt site in Schleswig-Holstein, which was previously among Germany’s largest battery storage installations. Insights from the pilot have been incorporated into the standardized FCA model, which is now being rolled out across E.ON’s grid regions.

According to E.ON, which operates distribution networks covering around 65% of Germany, grid operators have already committed approximately 25 GW of storage capacity, while receiving additional requests exceeding 500 GW—far above current peak demand levels.

E.ON Board Member for Energy Networks Thomas König said battery storage systems are expected to play a key role in the energy transition and emphasized that the FCA framework enables faster integration without compromising grid security.

ECO STOR representatives highlighted that flexible grid connection models allow storage systems to actively support more efficient use of existing infrastructure, while also improving investment certainty for future projects.

E.ON further stated that the FCA model could be extended to other use cases, including hybrid renewable systems and biogas plants, as part of a broader effort to standardize and accelerate grid connections while supporting Germany’s ongoing energy transition.
