The UK is set to have its seventh Prime Minister in a decade after Keir Starmer resigned on Monday (22 June), ending a premiership that had drawn criticism from parts of the hydrogen industry for failing to convert ambition into delivery.

At first glance, another change at the top of government appears unhelpful for a sector that has spent much of the past two years calling for greater policy certainty. Under Labour, progress on hydrogen has largely been characterised by indecision, with industry figures increasingly frustrated by delays to a and support mechanisms.

However, the impact of Starmer’s departure on the sector may prove more nuanced.

The now former mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, is widely believed to be Prime Minister-in-waiting, after winning a by-election to return to parliament after nine years.
