RWE and PPC Commission 930 MW Solar Portfolio in Greece, Advance Nearly 1 GW of Operational Capacity

Leading energy companies RWE and PPC have commissioned the final solar farm within a portfolio of nine photovoltaic (PV) projects in Western Macedonia, bringing nearly 1 GW of solar capacity into operation and marking a major milestone in Greece’s clean energy transition.

Developed through their joint venture Meton Energy S.A., in which RWE holds a 51% stake and PPC owns 49%, the nine solar farms have a combined installed capacity of 930 MWp (884 MWac). The projects are organised into three large-scale photovoltaic clusters built on the site of the former Amynteo open-cast lignite mine, transforming one of Greece’s historic coal-producing regions into a renewable energy hub.

The operational solar portfolio is expected to generate enough clean electricity annually to supply the equivalent of approximately 400,000 Greek households.

Beyond expanding renewable energy generation, the projects have delivered significant economic benefits during construction by creating hundreds of direct and indirect jobs. Meton Energy S.A. has also committed to supporting local communities through compensatory development projects, sponsorships, and donations in partnership with regional municipalities.

Commenting on the milestone, Sopna Sury, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said the commissioning of the three photovoltaic clusters reflects the strong collaboration between RWE and PPC and reinforces the companies’ long-term commitment to Greece’s energy transition. She added that, alongside the operational portfolio, two additional utility-scale solar projects are currently under construction.

Konstantinos Mavros, Deputy CEO RES, PPC Group, said the completion of the projects demonstrates PPC’s continued investment in renewable energy and its strategic focus on Western Macedonia. He noted that the company is targeting 19 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 while accelerating the integration of energy storage projects as part of its transformation into a Powertech Group.

Charilaos Mitrelias, CEO of RWE Renewables Hellas and CEO of Meton Energy S.A., said the projects represent a new chapter for Western Macedonia as it transitions from lignite-based electricity generation to a renewable energy centre. He highlighted that the partnership is creating sustainable economic opportunities, supporting local communities, and contributing to Greece’s national energy transition goals.

Looking ahead, RWE and PPC are developing two additional photovoltaic projects—Kotyli and Neo Syrakio—in the Central Macedonia region of Northern Greece. The projects will have a combined capacity of 567 MWp (518 MWac) and are scheduled for commissioning in 2027. Once operational, they are expected to generate enough electricity to meet the annual needs of more than 240,000 Greek households.
