California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation allowing electricity generated using green hydrogen to count towards the state’s Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS), creating a new incentive for hydrogen-fired power generation.

The legislation, proposed by state Senator Jerry McNerney, passed unanimously with a 38-0 vote in the Senate on Monday (June 29) after receiving a 74-0 vote in the state Assembly.

SB 1350 expands California’s definition of renewable electricity under the state’s RPS, which requires utilities to source a growing share of their electricity from eligible renewable resources.

Until now, electricity generated by burning green hydrogen in gas turbines was not eligible for RPS credits, limiting its value to utilities seeking to meet renewable energy targets.
