Sir Ian Wood, champion of the North Sea oil industry, dies at 84

(WO) — Sir Ian Wood, the industrialist who transformed a family-owned Aberdeen marine business into global engineering company Wood Group and helped shape the modern North Sea oil and gas industry, has died at the age of 84.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Wood played a central role in the growth of Aberdeen as one of the world’s leading offshore energy hubs. Under his leadership, the family business diversified into the emerging North Sea oil and gas sector during the industry’s early years, evolving into Wood Group, an international engineering company serving upstream operators around the world.

Wood joined the family business after graduating from the University of Aberdeen in 1964 and became managing director in 1967. Recognizing the potential of the North Sea before many of his peers, he shifted the company’s focus toward supporting offshore oil and gas development, laying the foundation for decades of growth. Wood Group became a standalone company in 1982, providing engineering, drilling and oilfield services to domestic and international markets.

One of the defining moments of his career came after the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster, in which 39 Wood Group employees were among the 167 workers who lost their lives. Deeply affected by the tragedy, Wood personally visited the families of those who died and became a strong advocate for improving offshore safety across the industry.

Wood Group continued its international expansion through the following decades, becoming a publicly traded company in 2002. By the time Wood stepped down as chief executive in 2006 and chairman in 2012, the company employed more than 42,000 people in over 50 countries and had joined the FTSE 100 Index. His contributions to the offshore industry were recognized with numerous honors, including a knighthood in 1994 for services to the offshore oil and gas industry and induction into the Offshore Energy Centre Hall of Fame in Houston in 2009.

Beyond business, Wood helped shape the future of the UK Continental Shelf through the independent Wood Review, commissioned by the UK government in 2013. Its recommendations led to significant regulatory reforms and directly resulted in the creation of today’s North Sea Transition Authority, reshaping stewardship of the basin for the decades that followed.

In later years, Wood increasingly focused on philanthropy and economic development through The Wood Foundation, Opportunity North East and the Energy Transition Zone, while continuing to advocate for the long-term competitiveness of Aberdeen’s energy sector.

Sir Ian Wood died peacefully at his home in Aberdeen on July 26. He is survived by his wife, Lady Helen, three sons and seven grandchildren.
