Chevron strikes oil and gas in Angola’s Block 0, eyes tieback development

(WO) — Chevron has made an oil and gas condensate discovery in Block 0 offshore Angola, encountering more than 300 ft of net pay as the company continues to expand its exploration program across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Kevin McLachlan, VP of Exploration at Chevron

The 105-4X exploration well, drilled in the Lower Congo basin, encountered an oil and gas condensate column exceeding 2,000 ft in the primary Pinda reservoir, including more than 300 ft of net pay in what Chevron described as excellent-quality reservoir rock.

Chevron said it will assess the discovery for potential development as a tie-back to nearby existing infrastructure, providing a potentially capital-efficient route to production.

“This discovery is another important milestone for Chevron’s over 70-year history in Angola,” said Kevin McLachlan, Chevron Vice President of Exploration. “By combining high-impact exploration with infrastructure-led opportunities close to existing facilities, we are growing our resource base, creating value, and demonstrating that our strategy is delivering, as well as our continued confidence in Angola’s resource potential.”

Chevron subsidiary Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Ltd. (CABGOC) operates Block 0 with a 39.2% working interest. Sonangol E&P holds 41%, TotalEnergies 10% and Azule Energy 9.8%.

The discovery adds to Chevron’s broader exploration push across Sub-Saharan Africa, where the company currently produces approximately 300,000 boed net.

In Nigeria, Chevron has added offshore acreage through farm-ins to PPL2000 and PPL2001 and the award of deepwater block PPL2010. The company has also recorded three near-field exploration successes in the country since late 2024 — Meji NW-1, South Delta AA and Awodi-07—and is continuing exploration and appraisal activity.

Chevron has also expanded its position in Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea while pursuing additional exploration offshore Angola, including in Blocks 49 and 50, Block 33 and Block 14/23.

The company is preparing a multi-well exploration campaign across the region, including plans to drill the Nabba-1X exploration well on PEL90 offshore Namibia before the end of 2026.
