Linde and Monash University Malaysia partner on industrial decarbonisation

The Malaysian arm of industrial gas major Linde has partnered with Monash University Malaysia and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) to accelerate industrial decarbonisation and support Malaysia’s energy transition.

The collaboration was announced at the Linde-Monash University Sustainability Conference 2026 in Selangor, Malaysia, which brought together around 400 participants from government, industry and academia.

Held under the theme “Shaping Tomorrow’s Energy”, the conference focused on commercially deployable technologies that could support Malaysia’s transition towards a lower-carbon industrial sector.

The collaboration also comes as Linde continues to strengthen its wider decarbonisation efforts, both across its own operations and through technologies aimed at helping customers reduce emissions. 

Linde said in its latest sustainability report that 50% of its electricity came from low-carbon and renewable sources in 2025, while the company has continued to expand its use of renewable electricity.

Discussions at the conference covered hydrogen, electrolysers, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, biomethane and biomass liquefied natural gas, cryogenic energy recovery and cleaner combustion technologies.

Industries highlighted as potential beneficiaries included oil and gas, chemicals, oleochemicals, food and beverage, semiconductors, energy, steel and metallurgy, and glass manufacturing.

Linde Malaysia Managing Director Hoo Peih Yoke said the collaboration was intended to connect sustainability ambitions with practical industrial action.

“By leveraging the combined strengths of each partner, the conference sought to facilitate knowledge exchange and identify actionable pathways for sustainable growth within the nation’s industrial sector,” she said.

A key development at the conference was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Linde Malaysia and Monash University Malaysia.

The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration in education, research, talent development and sustainability initiatives, with the partners aiming to strengthen knowledge exchange and develop practical applications for industrial decarbonisation.

Monash University Malaysia Head of School Professor Anthony Guo said the partnership represented a strategic alliance between government policy, industrial deployment and academic research.

The collaboration fits with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, which sets out the country’s pathway towards a low-carbon economy and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Linde said the tripartite initiative would also seek to support green investment, create greater dialogue between industry and academia, and showcase technologies that can be integrated into existing industrial operations.

The partners highlighted the importance of practical solutions that can deliver both emissions reductions and operational efficiencies across energy-intensive industries.

Linde’s panel of speakers also shared international case studies from markets where decarbonisation technologies are already in operation, alongside insights into green investment frameworks supported by MIDA.

The company’s decarbonisation progress has also faced scrutiny. Climate campaign group Action Speaks Louder that Linde remains exposed to energy price volatility because of its reliance on grid electricity and relatively limited use of actively procured renewable power in some major markets.

Its analysis has highlighted South Korea, India, the US, Germany and Ireland, while arguing that greater investment in renewable generation and power purchase agreements could improve both energy resilience and competitiveness as customers place greater emphasis on the emissions associated with their supply chains.

The scrutiny comes as electricity demand from energy-intensive industries continues to rise, while customers in sectors such as semiconductors increasingly seek to reduce emissions across their supply chains.

Linde has continued to expand its renewable power procurement in response. In July, the company announced six new power purchase agreements across Europe, Africa and India, expected to provide around 0.63 TWh of renewable electricity annually.
