IESA Calls for BRICS Collaboration on Energy Storage, Critical Minerals and Local Manufacturing to Accelerate Clean Energy Transition

The India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) has urged BRICS nations, including Brazil, Russia and the UAE, to strengthen cooperation on energy storage technologies, critical minerals and resilient supply chains to support the clean energy transition. The recommendations were submitted to the Government of India following a virtual event organised by the Ministry of Power, with IESA serving as the technical coordinator.

India’s clean industrial investment pipeline has reached an estimated US$433 billion, covering 65 projects across four sectors and 11 states. The pipeline has expanded by 30% over the past six months, driven by investments in green hydrogen, renewable energy manufacturing and low-carbon industries.

IESA said India’s energy storage project pipeline has crossed 100 GW, with around 10 GW already commissioned. However, the sector continues to face significant import dependence for critical minerals and key components. The alliance called for stronger domestic manufacturing, recycling capabilities and integrated supply chains.

The recommendations include expanding production-linked incentive support to recycling and advanced battery chemistries, alongside dedicated support for stationary energy storage. IESA also proposed mutual recognition of testing reports, harmonised measurement protocols and coordinated pilot projects among BRICS countries.

Industry experts from Brazil, Russia and the UAE highlighted the importance of secure mineral supply, localised storage solutions, supportive regulations and standardised techno-economic assessments. The collaboration is expected to support joint demonstrations, technology development and knowledge sharing across next-generation energy storage applications.
