HDF Energy targets hydrogen-to-power deployments in Indonesia

France’s HDF Energy has signed a deal with Indonesia’s Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) to advance green hydrogen and hydrogen-to-power projects in Indonesia.

Under a joint study development agreement, HDF’s Indonesia subsidiary and Pertamina’s renewable energy arm could co-develop projects using HDF’s Renewstable power plants as an alternative to diesel-based generation.

Renewstable plants combine solar or wind generation with battery and green hydrogen storage, allowing energy to be produced and stored when conditions are favourable, then dispatched through fuel cells to provide stable power around the clock.

The agreement, which did not lay out a specific development timeline, builds on an established pipeline of 23 HDF projects across eastern Indonesia. It also includes reciprocal exclusivity for projects in selected districts of East Nusa Tenggara and Papua.

According to the pair, Renewstable plants are “particularly suited” to remote and island regions, where electricity generation remains heavily reliant on imported diesel.

The companies will also explore industrial applications for green hydrogen in Indonesia.

While Indonesia’s green hydrogen market remains at an early stage, constrained by production costs, limited demand, and an underdeveloped regulatory framework, companies are beginning to launch projects in the country.

Last year, state-owned Pertamina NRE revealed it would co-develop green hydrogen and e-fuel technologies with HyET Clean Energy Solutions at a  in Kamojang, Java.

Hyundai Motor Group also outlined aims to establish a  in collaboration with Pertamina.
