Thailand is set to introduce a new rooftop solar support scheme as part of a broader energy strategy aimed at improving energy security, controlling electricity costs, and supporting the country’s transition toward cleaner energy. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced the measures during his opening address at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok.
The government will launch a 50 million baht (about US$1.5 million) scheme in mid-October to support households installing rooftop solar systems. The initiative is intended to help families reduce electricity expenses while increasing the use of renewable energy at the household level. Thailand will also provide tax exemptions on selected imported solar components to make solar installations more accessible.
The announcement comes as Thailand faces rising electricity demand from industrial expansion and the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data centers. The government’s energy strategy is built around maintaining reliable energy supplies while gradually increasing the role of clean energy.
Natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) will continue to play an important role in Thailand’s power system during the transition. Prime Minister Anutin said the energy transition must remain affordable for households and businesses to be sustainable over the long term.
The second part of the strategy focuses on practical investments in grid modernization, energy storage, and bioenergy. Thailand plans to use its large agricultural sector to convert crop residues into ethanol, biodiesel, and biomethane. The government expects this approach to create additional economic opportunities for farmers while supporting the country’s energy requirements.
Thailand also plans to connect its energy policies more closely with foreign investment. During the first half of 2026, investment promotion applications in the country reached approximately 1.4 trillion baht (US$43.6 billion), marking a 37 percent increase compared with the same period a year earlier. The investments are concentrated in areas including digital infrastructure, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing and are expected to generate more than 82,000 jobs.
The Prime Minister also called for greater international cooperation in hydrogen, carbon management, and renewable energy technologies. The government aims to position Thailand as a regional center for clean energy innovation, investment, and technology development.
Gastech 2026, being held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre, is bringing together more than 5,000 participants, 850 companies, and over 25 energy ministers. The event provides a platform for Thailand to present its energy transition priorities and attract international partnerships across emerging and established energy technologies.
