Mumbai-based refrigerant and industrial gases distributor Stallion India Fluorochemicals (Stallion) has commissioned a high-purity helium processing plant at its Khalapur, Maharashtra facility.
The plant has an annual installed helium processing capacity of 1,200 tonnes and will support high-purity helium debulking, blending, and processing operations for customers in the semiconductor, electronics, healthcare, aerospace and defence sectors.
Start-up of the facility represents Stallion’s entry into the high-purity helium market, with helium revenue from the plant expected from the second quarter of FY2027.
The site’s 1,200-tonne capacity is expected to ramp up gradually rather than reach full utilisation immediately.
Stallion expects to sell around five containers in FY27, rising to 12 containers the following year and 24 thereafter.
This comes amid India’s $13.2bn Semiconductor Mission 2.0 push, which aims to advance efforts to build a self-reliant chip industry and reduce dependence on overseas supply chains.
It also comes as India expands its semiconductor manufacturing capacity, creating potential demand for high-purity gases and other materials used in chip production.
Helium is critical in semiconductor manufacturing, used primarily to cool wafers during high-temperature processes like etching and deposition. These steps are energy-intensive, and helium helps maintain precise temperature control.
By 2030, the global semiconductor industry is expected to grow to $1 trillion, and Indian semiconductor demand is expected to cross $110bn, driving demand for high-purity specialty and industrial gases used in semiconductor manufacturing.
Last week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi two new semiconductor plants and launched the expanded India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 on the opening day of Semicon India 2026 in New Delhi.
