The first plant in the Basque Country which converts organic waste into biomethane has officially opened.
The €25m ($28.5m) Metabarri facility is the result of a public-private partnership involving the provincial council of Bizkaia, Eve (Basque Energy Agency) and waste management firm PreZero. A €17m ($19.4m) grant was provided from EU Next Generation funds.
The 8,300sqm site is located next to the current composting plant of the Ecoparque de Artigas, which will process food waste collected in brown containers.
Elixabete Etxanobe, Deputy General of Bizkaia, said the plant will transform up to 50,000 tonnes of organic waste per year and demonstrates the circular economy “is a reality”.
Mikel Amundarain, General Director of the Basque Energy Agency, said the plant is a new step in the construction of a cleaner and more sustainable energy system for the Basque Country.
