ESR has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of Aquila Clean Energy APAC, a clean energy platform owned by Aquila Group. The transaction will give ESR control of a renewable energy business with a portfolio spanning solar, battery storage and wind projects across key Asia-Pacific markets.
Aquila Clean Energy APAC currently has a 1.6 GW portfolio covering operational, under-construction and advanced-development assets. Its projects are located in Australia and New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. The acquisition is expected to expand ESR’s presence in renewable energy and provide additional opportunities for investment and project development across the region.
ESR is an Asia-Pacific real asset owner and manager with businesses covering logistics real estate, data centres and infrastructure. The company said the acquisition reflects the growing connection between energy infrastructure and the development of logistics facilities and data centres.
Rising electricity demand, digitalisation and industrial decarbonisation are increasing the importance of reliable and low-carbon power infrastructure. ESR said its investment in Aquila Clean Energy APAC will strengthen its ability to provide capital partners with investment opportunities across interconnected real asset sectors.
Phil Pearce, President of ESR, said the company has entered its next phase of growth with a focus on sectors supporting resilient supply chains, digital economies and long-term economic development. He said the increasing interconnection between logistics infrastructure, data centres and power is creating opportunities at the intersection of these sectors, with energy infrastructure becoming an increasingly important area for long-term capital deployment.
Apurv Choudhary, Group Head of Infrastructure at ESR, said Aquila Clean Energy APAC brings an experienced management team and a diversified renewables portfolio across important Asia-Pacific markets. He added that the platform is strategically aligned with ESR’s regional footprint and that the company intends to scale the business while maintaining a focus on returns and execution.
Following completion of the transaction, ESR plans to work with the existing Aquila Clean Energy APAC management team to accelerate the platform’s growth, expand investment solutions and pursue opportunities across its Asia-Pacific operations.
Roman Rosslenbroich, CEO and Co-founder of Aquila Group, said the platform has developed into a clean energy business covering solar, wind and battery storage in major Asia-Pacific markets. He described ESR as a suitable owner for the business and said the transaction reflects recognition of the platform built by the Aquila Clean Energy APAC team.
The transaction is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and applicable regulatory and other approvals.
