In what it called “a significant step towards exploring new horizons for nuclear power development in Gujarat”, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) said the MoU would “facilitate collaboration between the two organisations for discussions, relevant information sharing, identification of potential sites and assessment of their technical suitability for nuclear power development”.
NPCIL, in social media posts, added: “The initiative marks an important step in exploring Gujarat’s potential to contribute to India’s expanding nuclear energy programme and its long-term pursuit of reliable, clean and low-carbon electricity. As India advances towards a stronger and more sustainable energy future, nuclear power will play an important role in strengthening energy security and supporting the nation’s clean energy transition.”
It said the collaboration would help contribute to India’s Viksit Bharat vision of development and help towards the goal of achieving net-zero by 2070.
India currently has 24 operable reactors, with a capacity of nearly 8 GWe. There are also eight units under construction, with a combined capacity of 6 GWe. The government has set out the goal of increasing India’s nuclear energy capacity to 100 GWe by 2047.
